Overview

Photo Dream South Beach Hip, fresh, ambitious. Newly opened, the 108-room Dream South Beach embodies these qualities and more, spread throughout two Art Deco icons — the Tudor and Palmer houses — at Collins Avenue and 11th Street, near the former Versace Mansion. One of the latest projects of the Chatwal family, the hotel fits in nicely with its surroundings, with a facade restored to its original glory and reinvented interiors that reflect South Beach in the present day.

An illuminated pathway flanked by fountains and bamboo leads to the lobby, which is crowned by a front desk that dates back to 1939 — the year the original exterior was built. Bold, textured carpets line the hallways, smooth baroque flourishes are carved on the doors, and the closets and shower doors are made of tinted glass. Combined with cool blue lighting, modern crystal chandeliers and textured bathroom tiles, the whole place has a moody, edgy vibe.

White filigreed headboards and glass shower doors define the Junior Suite Kings.Indeed, the design of the boutique-size rooms is Twitter-worthy — imagine small metal tables, white filigreed headboards and robin’s egg–blue blankets — and at 350 square feet, the Junior Suites seem made for intimate pre- and post-party gatherings with friends (not families looking for a quieter scene). As you’d expect, there are iPod docking stations and LCD TVs, plus Etro bath products.

The silky beach and the blue ocean are just a block away, and Dream has its own spread of lounge chairs. Nearby you’ll find the shops of Lincoln Road, and even better, the property is within stumbling distance of most of the area’s trendy nightlife spots.

That said, it’s possible to achieve a glowing tan, eat and drink, and take part in South Beach nightlife without ever leaving the hotel. A sky bridge connects the Palmer House and the Tudor House, and a hip crowd gathers at the intimate white-on-gold rooftop infinity pool and bar area at all hours — for swimming during the day, lounging and posing in the evening. Downstairs, chef Geoffrey Zakarian (of Food Network fame) helms the Tudor House, which has leather banquettes and teak partitions, and dishes out sophisticated versions of American comfort food, such as country fried chicken and homemade oreos. Dreams do come true, after all.

Hotel Scene

Party People: Although the people watching around the Dream South Beach is grand, you might also want to check out the beauties along Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive.

Stroll: Even Miami residents can’t stay away from Lincoln Road. Only a few blocks from the Dream South Beach, this historic pedestrian mall has everything from clothing shops to cafés to art galleries to the concert hall of the New World Symphony.

Must Love Gators: Rent a car and visit the awesome alligators, birds and other wildlife of the country’s largest subtropical wilderness, Everglades National Park.

Snapshots: Art Deco style is king here; go on your own photo safari and capture the world’s foremost examples of the design movement — including the Tudor and Palmer houses, of course. Make it more official with an audio tour on your iPod or on a guided tour.

Dine by Design: The Design District is loaded with fascinating furniture shops and incredible restaurants. The two intersect at Fratelli Lyon, an Italian restaurant adjoining a design store where your place settings — and even the table — are for sale.
