Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort and Club

Aventura, 20 minutes north of Miami Beach, literally grew around Fairmont Turnberry Isle, stemming from one man’s dream sketched on a cocktail napkin. Built in the 1970s, the resort began as a members-only country club before opening its doors to hotel guests. The property retains a country club feel, with families by the pool, friends on the golf courses and a white-gloved staff.

Celebrity guests from Michael Jackson to Bill Clinton have been drawn here, and it’s easy to see why. At Turnberry Isle there’s an old world sense of luxury — marble floors, limestone statues, dark wood — in a distinctly New World setting. Turnberry Isle has two 18-hole Raymond Floyd–designed golf courses.Each of the 392 guestrooms and suites is designed with the tropical climate in mind, in a palette of butterscotch, beige and green. Arched doorways and gilded mirrors in the rooms, and the resort’s terra-cotta tile roof, are cues from historic Mediterranean style.

Outside the French doors of the rooms’ private balconies are the greens of the famous Raymond Floyd–designed Soffer and Miller courses. If golf isn’t your sport, the tennis pro can help with your serve on one of the four clay hydrocourts.

For less athletic types, there’s the Laguna Pool, which features a water slide and a lazy river. The cabanas are outfitted with flat-screen TVs and refrigerators (this is Miami — a plain cabana just won’t do here). Guests can hop on the complimentary shuttle and head to the newly renovated Ocean Club; the 300-acre resort also has a full-service spa and a marina for sailing and fishing excursions.

After a sun-filled day, the hotel restaurant, Bourbon Steak, is a welcome indulgence. A Michael Mina restaurant designed by Tony Chi, it has the ambience of a South Beach eatery with none of the fuss. The contemporary decor, American fare and buzzing atmosphere serve up a smart night out.
